After graduation I floundered around for about a year and realized that my life was not headed in a positive direction. For the next four years the U.S. Navy provided all the direction that was needed. My enlistment sent me to California, Okinawa, Viet Nam and Alaska.
When my enlistment was over I returned home and found employment as a Deputy Sheriff for the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Department that continued until mid-1969. During this period I met my wife Barbara and we were married in august 1966. Three years later our daughter and only child Monica was born. Also during this period I enrolled in Auburn Community College and earned a A.A.S. Degree in Criminal Justice.
Desiring to continue my education and needing to provide for my family at the same time we moved to Oswego where I was accepted at the State University College at Oswego and gained employment as a police officer at the Oswego Police Department. (As a side note at that time the Admission Officer for Oswego State was Kenneth Sicke our coach from RCCS, I learned about a week ago that he just passed away). My employment a a police officer lasted two years when I changed employment to Campus Police at Oswego State as a Criminal Investigator. I graduated from Oswego State in 1974 with a dual B.A. Degree, Cum Laude in Public Justice and Sociology.
After graduation I successfully completed recruit training at the NY State Police Academy for Environmental Conservation Police Officer. After four years as a field officer promotions came fairly rapidly from Sergeant, Lieutenant then Captain. I remained in this position for seventeen years in charge of law enforcement for a nine county area in central NY.
My next move was to accept a promotion to Major and transfer to the Albany Office where I was in charge of the Office of Professional Standards and Internal Affairs. After three years in this position I retired from state service in December 1999 and returned home to Oswego. Shortly thereafter Barbara retired from her position as a School Nurse for the Oswego City School District.
About a year after retirement from NYS I was asked by several community leaders to consider becoming the Chief of Police for the City of Oswego, I was appointed to that position in July 2001. During the next two years the department was modernized procedurally and technologically and gained state and national Accreditation Awards.
After serving in this position for five years I retired again and currently enjoy numerous hobbies including participating in Professional Walleye Fishing Tournaments in the summer, working in my wood shop in the winter.
We have three granddaughters age 5, 7 and 10. Our daughter is a full time mom and son-in-law is a senior executive officer with a investment firm in New Jersey where we visit them as often as possible.
