College – SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry/Syracuse - BS in Land Management in 1964; MS in Forestry Economics 1974.
I was drafted into the Army in October 1964, serving until August 1966. I served most of my term in South Korea near the DMZ as a microwave radio repairman.
I’m married to Louise who is from Arlington, VA. She has a BA in English from Colorado College and was and editor and Chief of Publications at the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC). We have no children.
After college, I was a forester for Pennsylvania, living mostly in Emporium and in Ligonier for less than a year. I moved to Arlington in 1974 to work as an industry analyst for forest products with the ITC in Washington, DC. Among other things, the ITC undertakes investigations to determine if imports are harming domestic industry and prepares reports for trade agreement negotiations.
In 1979, I moved to the Internal Revenue Service, specializing in timber taxation. Shortly thereafter reorganization put me in the Office of Chief Counsel, where for years I was the principal timber tax law specialist. I was involved in income tax regulations, rulings and litigation. Additional issues I was involved in include depreciation, investment tax credits, low-income housing credits, casualty losses and property valuations. I retired in 2005.
In 2005, Louise and I bought a house in Sterling, where we spend our summers. Since its purchase, we have been very busy making improvements, which are ongoing. Our Sterling address is 1355 State Route 104A, Sterling, NY 13156, phone: (315) 947-6515.
